Artificial Intelligence: Powering Global Development and Local Innovation

June 8, 2025, Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to solidify its position as a transformative force, holding immense promise for global development and balanced growth. Recent discussions at the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, coupled with groundbreaking regional initiatives like the AI University in Andhra Pradesh, underscore this pervasive and accelerating trend.

The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, held in Brasilia, saw parliamentary delegations from member nations engage in robust discussions on the responsible and inclusive application of AI. A consensus emerged that AI presents a significant opportunity for achieving development and fostering balanced growth across diverse economies. The emphasis was not merely on technological advancement, but on ensuring that this progress is underpinned by sound governance, fair legislation, and a strong consideration for ethical and human dimensions. The UAE, for instance, highlighted its proactive approach with the appointment of the world's first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and the launch of its 2031 AI Strategy, aiming to enhance government efficiency and foster innovation. This global dialogue at the BRICS forum clearly signals that AI is no longer a niche topic but a core component of future national and international strategies for prosperity.
Simultaneously, a significant regional stride is being made with the Government of Andhra Pradesh's partnership with NVIDIA to establish an AI University in Amaravati. This collaboration is a strategic move to position Andhra Pradesh as a national hub for AI, aiming to train 10,000 engineering students in AI skills over the next two years. Beyond education, the initiative also includes provisions for fostering a robust AI ecosystem, with up to 500 startups eligible to participate in NVIDIA's Inception Programme, providing access to technology, mentorship, and potential investment. This ambitious project seeks to build "next-generation AI Factories"—dedicated hubs for innovation, industry partnerships, and talent development, with NVIDIA sharing global best practices.
The convergence of these global and regional efforts paints a clear picture: AI is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver for economic growth, efficiency, and competitiveness. From streamlining international trade to revolutionizing healthcare and empowering urban planning, AI's applications are vast and growing. While concerns about job displacement persist, the consensus is that AI will also create new roles and opportunities, necessitating proactive measures for reskilling and ethical implementation.
The discussions at the BRICS Parliamentary Forum and the establishment of the AI University in Andhra Pradesh are powerful testaments to the world's growing commitment to harnessing AI for a more developed, balanced, and prosperous future. The focus is shifting from simply adopting AI to strategically integrating it with robust governance frameworks and localized initiatives, ensuring its benefits are widely distributed and responsibly managed.
